5 month internship at Studio Lotus
Studio Lotus is a Delhi based interior design and architecture agency that uses cultural codes to generate inspiration and create projects with a strong regional identity. In this placement I had the opportunity to be involved in numerous projects, from book editing to pattern and furniture research.
The following is representative of the work I carried out.
Krishi Bhawan (farmer institute); this is a design proposal for the Government building for Agriculture for Odisha (India). In order to promote the region’s culture, I had to develop with four brick colours, a pattern reflecting the Ikats (traditional saris from this region) in order to establish a long ‘sari’ as the building’s skin. The idea for the rendering of the façade came from the style inspired by old paintings. This project was chosen for the final design of the building.
Chak Ban Rakh is a boutique hotel which will be built in Daramsala, in the Himalayas. The design had to be inspired from the local anti-earthquake houses built using stone, slate and wood. I developed several patterns for the staircase corridors inspired by photos of old local houses taken by Lotus team.
Benihana is a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant chain, opening in Delhi. From the layouts that were given to me, I developed on SketchUp a 3D model and carried out furniture research for the seats which had to be inspired from traditional uncluttered Japanese shapes and playing around with wooden slats.
