9 month internship and work experience with INTACH

The Pondicherry chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) entrusted me with the renovation design of the Pondicherry Museum over the period of a four month internship which was extended by a further five month work experience.

I had to entirely revamp the town’s history museum and its extension into another building.

A museum creation programme was established working with a team of historians, restorers and architects ranging from thematic rooms to spatial design and graphic line issues.

The museum’s new identity draws on the incorporation of plain local materials, black and white colouring and archive photos (for the graphic design) in order to stress the gravitas of a history museum; bright colours have been introduced in order to liven up space and add an “off-the-wall” impact to the graphic identity.

I had the opportunity of having a team of internees to assist me in my work which gave me experience in team management as well as sharing my software skills including SketchUp and Photoshop.

The main character of the new logo is built around the first letter of “museum” in Tamil script, but it is also reminiscent of the Roman character “H” taken from History Museum. The font was chosen for its curves recalling Tamil script and the signage draws on Tamil characters to develop pictograms.
